TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 15 Washburn men's tennis won its first match home after a three-match road swing with a 6-1 win over Rockhurst on Saturday afternoon in the two teams' second matchup of the season. The Ichabods stay in Topeka to take on McPherson College at the Washburn Tennis Courts on Feb. 28.
Tim Hammes and Santiago Rendon got the day started Washburn's way with a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles. Yoshinobu Nakatsuji and Daniel Bird clinched the doubles point for the Ichabods with a 6-3 win at No. 2. Daniel Harkin and Moritz Pieper put up a battle at No. 3 but fell in a close 7-5 match.
Singles play started on court one and a quick two-set win for Tim Hammes with sets of 6-3 and 6-1. Miquel Perez extended the lead at No. 3, winning 6-2 and 6-3. Santiago Rendon clinched the match for the Ichabods, winning his first set 6-2 and closing out the second 7-6(1).
Daniel Bird stayed perfect in spring season singles with 6-2 and 6-3 wins at No. 4. The Hawks got on the scoreboard after Moritz Pieper fell at No. 5, both sets ending 6-4. Yoshinobu Nakatsuji closed out the match for Washburn at No. 6, winning by scores of 6-3 and 6-2.
