TOPEKA, Kan. – The No. 21 Washburn Ichabods went 1-1 on the first day of the ESU Classic hosted by Washburn at Gahnstrom Field on Saturday topping Oklahoma Baptist 3-2 in extra Innings before falling to Minnesota State 5-0 in the nightcap. Washburn returns to action on Sunday facing Concordia-St. Paul and Winona State in a pair of NSIC contests.
Game 1 – Washburn 3, Oklahoma Baptist 2
Paige Robbins' sac bunt in the bottom of the eighth scored
Jenna Moore who was placed on second with the international tiebreak as the Ichabods walked it off with a 3-2 win.
Washburn scored two runs in the bottom of the second after
Marrit Mead singled to right center leading off the inning and after stealing second, she came around to score on a triple by
Autymn Schreiner. On the next pitch,
Jaden LaBarge doubled scoring Schriener as the Ichabods took a 2-0 lead.
OBU (9-2) broke up the shutout in the top of the seventh scoring two runs tying the score sending the game to extra innings. The Bison went down in order after their initial runner was placed on second setting up the Ichabods in the eighth for the win.
Jaycee Ginter (6-1) struck out 11 in the game allowing two earned runs. Mead finished with two hits.
Game 2 – Minnesota State 5, WU 0
The Mavericks, who received votes in this week's NFCA Top 25 poll, scored a run in the top of the first and added three more in the third and another in the sixth leading to the 6-0 win. The Ichabods struggled on defense with three errors leading to three unearned runs for the Mavericks (4-2).
Mead had two of the Ichabods' six total hits in the game.
Sadie Walker pitched the first two innings allowing one earned run falling to 1-2 on the season.
