TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 17 Washburn women's tennis won its third straight match and avenged its first loss of the season with a 5-2 home win over Rockhurst on Saturday afternoon. The Ichabods will play McPherson College in an exhibition at the Washburn Tennis Courts on Feb. 28.
Doubles play went quickly on court one with a win for Maja Jung and Sonia Smagina as the duo stayed undefeated on the season with a 6-1 victory. Isabella Martensson and Issabella Pensavalle took the doubles point for the Ichabods, winning 6-2 at No. 3. Casie Curry and Marta Torres completed the doubles sweep with a 6-4 win at No. 2.
Sonia Smagina started singles play for Washburn as well, winning at No. 1 in 6-0 and 6-1 sets. Maja Jung followed her at No. 2 with 6-1 and 6-2 decisions to claim a third point for the Ichabods. Marta Torres won 6-3 and 7-5 at No. 3 to clinch the match for Washburn.
Isabella Martensson completed the second half of a 2-0 day for her with 6-1 and 6-4 sets at No. 5. The Hawks got on the board after Casie Curry fell at No. 4 by set scores of 6-4 and 6-2. Rockhurst got the final point in singles after Issabella Pensavalle lost 6-4 and 6-3 at No. 6.
