HAYS, Kan. – The Washburn baseball team captured their eighth-straight victory with a 4-1 win at Fort Hays State on Sunday afternoon. The Ichabods will play their next four games at home, starting with a non-conference tilt against Missouri Western on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
Fort Hays (7-8, 0-3 MIAA) struggled with its command on the mound to start the game and after recording the first out, walked three-consecutive batters to load the bases.
Ike Book knocked in the first run on the first pitch of his at bat with an infield single to give the Ichabods a 1-0 advantage in the first.
Washburn (9-7, 3-0 MIAA) extended its lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning with RBI singles from
Otto Jones and
Cal Watkins.
Easton Bruce led off the fifth with a solo shot to right field to push the Ichabod to 4-0.
The Tigers spoiled the shutout in the bottom of the sixth with an unearned run to make it 4-1.
Charlie Kiefer pitched a scoreless seventh inning and
Chase Torkelson finished out the last two frames and allowed only a single and two walks.
The Ichabods out hit the Tigers, 10-7. Book was 3-5 with an RBI and stolen base. Bruce finished the day 2-4 with a home run, double, and a walk. Jones finished with a hit, RBI, and run scored.
Torkelson improved to 2-1 after throwing the last two scoreless innings. Washburn starter
Jack Brimacombe went four innings and did not allow a run on four hits and six walks while striking out five.
