DES MOINES, Iowa – No. 16 Washburn men's tennis lost a Sunday road exhibition match to Drake 6-1 in the team's final exhibition of the season.
Doubles play went the Bulldogs way with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Sebastian Pjontek and Noah Neideck lost 6-3 on the first court while Daniel Bird and Yoshinobu Nakatsuji took a 6-2 decision at No. 3. Tim Hammes and Santiago Rendon trailed 5-2 at No. 2 at the time of Drake earning the point.
No. 35 Sebastian Pjontek lost a two-set match from No. 2, losing 6-3 in the first set. Santiago Rendon was close in the first set, losing 7-5 but also fell in two sets at No. 3. Tim Hammes won the only point of the day for the Ichabods at No. 1, winning in three sets, 6-3, 1-6 and 6-3.
Daniel Bird lost two competitive sets at No. 4, 6-3 and 6-4. Noah Neideck also lost in two sets at No. 5, with the final set 6-2 in favor of the Bulldogs. Moritz Pieper took the first set at No. 6, winning 6-4, but fell 4-6 in the second and 10-3 in the third set tiebreaker.
Washburn will be in action on Friday Feb. 10 in St. Louis, Mo. taking on the University of Indianapolis beginning at 1:30 p.m.
