Ichabod softball team sweeps the competition on day 2 of the LCU Invitational

LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 22 ranked Washburn Ichabod softball team was a perfect 2-0 on the second day of the Lubbock Christian Invitational with wins over UC-Colorado Springs 7-1 and 7-4 over Eastern New Mexico. The Ichabods will wrap up the event with a single game against Southwestern Oklahoma State tomorrow.
 
Game 1 – WU 7, UCCS 1
The Ichabods (3-1) broke open a scoreless tie in the third inning when Marrit Mead singled and then stole second and came around to score on a double by Jaycee Ginter staking the Ichabods to a 1-0 lead.
 
Washburn added two more in the fourth when Mead's double scored Ellington Hogle who walked and then Hailey Neira singled.
 
In the fifth inning, Washburn added two more runs taking advantage of a Mountain Lion error when Kaylee Wagner homered to center scoring Ginter pushing the lead to 4-0.
 
The Ichabods added two more runs in the sixth when Hadley Kerschen walked and then moved to second on a sac bunt my Neira. Mead would single up the middle and then steal second and then Paige Robbins singled to load the bases. Ginter drew a bases-loaded walk and then Erin Boles drove in a run with a ground out to second.
 
The Mountain Lions added a solo run in the seventh ending the shutout.
 
Mead had three hits for the Ichabods and scored two runs while driving in two  also swiping two bases. Ginter pitched 6 1/3 innings striking out 12 to go to 2-0 on the season.
 
Game 2 – WU 7, ENMU 4
Washburn scored two in each of its first two at bats scoring in four of the first five innings moving to 3-1 on the season with a 7-4 win over Eastern New Mexico.
 
Washburn jumped on the board in its first at bat after Mead led off the game with a single and then scored on Jaden LaBarge's single to left. Wagner's fielder's choice scored Ginter as Washburn went up 2-0.
 
In the second, Washburn added two more after Autymn Schreiner doubled and was sent home by Mead's single to right. After Mead stole second, Robbins' single scored Mead stretching the lead to 4-0.
 
ENMU scored three times in the third on three hits cutting the Washburn lead to 4-3, but the Ichabods came back with a run of their own when Schreiner scored on Ginter's bases loaded walk as Washburn went up 5-3.
 
The Ichabods held the Greyhounds scoreless in the bottom of the fourth and then added two more runs when Boles' ground out scored Allison Hemsath who came in as a pinch runner. Mead's single then scored Schreiner who reached on a fielder's choice.
 
ENMU (2-2) added a solo run in the fifth but would not get any closer as the Ichabods won the nightcap 7-4.
 
Mead had three hits and LaBarge had two in the win. Ginter moved to 3-0 on the season pitching five innings in relief.
