KEARNEY, Neb. -- No. 21 Washburn (7-2, 2-0) claimed its first ranked win Friday afternoon with a 4-3 road victory over No. 22 Nebraska-Kearney (8-7, 0-2) to stay unbeaten in MIAA play. The Ichabods travel to Florida next week for three matches beginning with Rollins College in Orlando on March 15.
Washburn started its run to a fifth straight victory winning two out of three doubles contests. Casie Curry and Marta Torres fell 6-2 at No. 2 but Isabella Martensson and Issabella Pensavalle quickly claimed a 6-1 victory at No. 3 to even things up. No. 9 Sonia Smagina and Maja Jung pulled out a 6-3 No. 1 victory to put the Ichabods up 1-0.
Maddie Shelly made it 2-0 for Washburn with a decisive victory at No. 6, winning both sets 6-0. The Lopers got one point back as Pensavalle fell 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5. No. 2 Smagina stayed unbeaten in the spring with a win at No. 1 by decisions of 6-4 and 6-2.
Curry lost her first set 6-3 at No. 3 and came close after leading early in the second set before falling 7-5. Jung came through with the match clinching point at No. 2 in three sets, 4-6, 6-2 and 6-2. She picked up her 50th career singles victory in the process. Martensson won her first set 6-3 at No. 4 but fell in the final two sets 6-4, 6-2 to close out the match 4-3.
