WINTER PARK, Fla. -- No. 19 Washburn women's tennis (8-2) began its time in Florida with its second consecutive ranked victory, defeating No. 48 Rollins College (5-5) 4-3 on Wednesday morning into the afternoon. The Ichabods will continue trekking around Florida to take on No. 12 Flagler College on Saturday at 10 a.m. CT.
Washburn picks up win number six in a row with the victory and stays undefeated at 4-0 on the road. Doubles play was a clean sweep for the Ichabods beginning with a 6-2 victory for Casie Curry and Marta Torres at No. 2. Issabella Pensavalle and Isabella Martensson had the same result with a point-clinching 6-2 win at No. 3. The No. 17 ranked pairing of Sonia Smagina and Maja Jung won 6-4 at No. 1 to complete the doubles sweep.
No. 32 ranked Jung worked quickly in singles play, winning a two-set victory by sets of 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2. The Tars got on the board with Torres falling 6-3, 6-4 in her match at No. 3. On court one No. 2 Smagina won 6-1 in the first set but dropped the second 6-2, she returned to her first set form to take a 6-1 third set victory.
At No. 4, Curry began with a 6-3 win but fell 6-2, 6-4 in the following two sets for Rollins' second point. Martensson picked up the match clinching point at No. 5 after splitting the first two sets she came away with a swift 6-1 win in the third set to clinch the match. Maddie Shelley won her first set 7-5 at No. 6 but fell 6-1, 6-0 in the final two sets to close the match.
