ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- No. 19 Washburn's six match winning streak came to an end Sunday with a 4-3 loss to No. 12 Flagler College. The Ichabods (8-2), play Saint Leo University tomorrow at 2 p.m., CT to finish the road trip.
Doubles play began in the Saints favor with the No. 17 ranked pairing of Sonia Smagina and Maja Jung losing together for the first time this season 6-0 to the No. 9 ranked doubles tandem of Dana Heimen and Luisa Hrda.
The Ichabods fought back, getting a 6-4 No. 3 win from Isabella Martensson and Issabella Pensavalle to even things up. Casie Curry and Marta Torres closed out the point with a 6-4 win of their own at No. 3.
In singles action No. 32 Jung fell in two sets, 6-1, 6-3 to the No. 6 ranked Nadja Meier. Maddie Shelley fell playing from No. 6, losing 6-1 in both sets. No. 2 Smagina picked up a decisive 6-1, 6-4 victory over No. 5 Hrda at No. 1 to even the score at two.
Torres battled in her first set but came up short, losing 7-5 and lost the second set 6-2 to No. 56 Heimen at No. 3. Flagler was able to clinch the victory with Martensson falling in two sets on court four, losing both 6-4 to No. 53 Eryka Kruk. Curry picked up a win after the decision, winning 7-5 in the first set, coming up just short in the second, losing 7-6(2) but bouncing back to win the super tiebreaker 10-4 to close the match.
