ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Washburn men's tennis came up short Sunday afternoon, losing to No. 21 Flagler College (9-4) 5-2. The Ichabods (7-4) finish out their Florida road trip taking on No. 20 ranked Florida Southern College on Monday at 2 p.m. CT.
Doubles action went in the Saints favor across the board, beginning at No. 1 with a 6-1 loss for Miquel Perez and Sebastian Pjontek. Daniel Bird and Yoshinobu Nakatsuji fell 6-3 at No. 3, giving Flagler the point. No. 34 Tim Hammes and Santiago Rendon also came up short at No. 2, losing 6-4.
In singles action Nakatsuji lost in two sets at No. 6 by decisions of 6-0 and 6-3. No. 58 Hammes fell at No. 1 to No. 27 ranked Nikita Tatyanin, losing 6-3, 6-2. The Saints clinched the match with Rendon dropping 6-3, 6-1 sets at No. 3.
No. 70 Pjontek also lost a two set match from No. 2, 6-3, 6-2. Washburn closed out the match with two straight wins, first from Bird at No. 4, winning 7-6(5) and closing out the win with a 6-2 second set performance. Moritz Pieper notched a comeback victory at No. 5, losing 6-4 in the first set, bouncing back to win 6-4 in the second set and winning 10-8 in the super tiebreaker to close out the match.
