No. 19 Ichabods fall to No. 2 ranked Lions 6-1

SAINT LEO, Fla. -- No. 19 Washburn lost its final match in Florida, dropping a 6-1 decision to No. 2 Saint Leo on Monday afternoon. The Ichabods will be right back in action taking on Harding University on Thursday at the Washburn Tennis Courts to begin a five-match home stand.  

The match started with a sweep for the Lions in doubles play. Isabella Martensson and Issabella Pensavalle lost 6-1 at No. 3 to open the match. The final two courts came down to the wire, first with No. 17 Sonia Smagina and Maja Jung falling to Lavinia Lancellotti and Marta Vicens, ranked No. 6 nationally, 7-5, giving Saint Leo the match's first point.  

Court No. 2 went into a tiebreaker and ended with Casie Curry and Marta Torres coming up just short, losing 7-6(4) to finish up doubles play. 

Singles started with a win for the Lions at No. 5, with Pensavalle falling in two sets, 6-1, 6-2. Curry lost her match at No. 4 by decisions of 6-3 and 6-1. The Ichabods got a point as No. 32 Jung was able to knock off No. 11 ranked Claudia Borbon Roca in two sets, 6-4 in the first and 6-2 in the second.  

Maddie Shelley lost 6-1 in her opening set at No. 6 but rallied to win 6-2 in the second set. The third set went in favor of Saint Leo 6-1 and the Lions clinched the match. No. 2 ranked Smagina lost her first dual of the season at No. 1, losing 6-3, 6-2 to No. 17 Marta Vicens Miquel. Torres battled at No. 3, bringing both sets to extra points but lost 7-5 in the first and 7-6(4) in the second.
