TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 19 Washburn women's tennis (8-5, 2-1) lost its first conference contest of the season Saturday afternoon dropping a 4-3 decision to No. 27 Northwest Missouri State (11-3, 3-0). The Ichabods stay at home and in conference next Tuesday taking on Missouri Western State.
Doubles action began at No. 3 with Issabella Pensavalle and Isabella Martensson falling 6-2. Sonia Smagina and Maja Jung, ranked No. 21, claimed a 6-1 victory at No. 1 to even up the scoring. The Bearcats were able to take the doubles point at No. 2 as Marta Torres and Casie Curry fell 6-3.
In singles, newly No. 1 ranked Smagina won in two sets at No. 1 over No. 30 ranked Vera Alenicheva 6-3, 6-2. Torres gave Washburn the lead with a pair of 6-4 set victories on court three. No. 19 Jung won her opening set 6-3 against No. 59 Tyffaine Pais but fell 6-2 in each of the next two sets.
In the back half of singles Curry led off with a win from No. 4 in two sets, both by scores of 6-2. Maddie Shelley lost 6-0, 6-3 from No. 6 to even up the match at three. Martensson lost her first set from No. 5 7-5 but was able to come from behind in the second set and win 7-5. In the third she fell 6-0 which was the final point in Northwest Missouri State's 4-3 victory.
