TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 35 Washburn men's tennis played its final regular season match in Topeka and finished with a 7-0 sweep of Newman (10-9, 2-3 MIAA)to close out conference competition. The Ichabods (11-7, 3-1 MIAA) take on Ouachita Baptist in Arkadelphia, Arkansas on Friday. Â
Just like the match, doubles play was a sweep for the Ichabods, beginning on court two with a 6-1 win for No. 14 ranked Santiago Rendon and Tim Hammes. Miquel Perez and Sebastian Pjontek, ranked No. 16 nationally, clinched doubles at No. 1 with a 6-3 win. Daniel Bird and Yoshinobu Nakatsuji made it a sweep from No. 3, winning 6-4.Â
Bird finished doubles and went right into singles where he led off with a quick two-set win at No. 3 by scores of 6-2 and 6-1. No. 35 ranked Hammes followed on court one, winning 6-1, 6-3. Playing at No. 2, Perez clinched the match in three sets, winning set one 6-2, losing 6-4, and closing out with a 6-3 win. Â
Rendon led off the second round of doubles with a quick 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4. Moritz Piper won his opening set 6-3 but fell 6-0 in the second. In the super tiebreaker he rallied to win 10-2 at No. 5. Daniel Harkin completed the sweep of the Jets at No. 6 rolling to a 6-2, 6-0 win. Â
