ARKADELPHIA, Ar. -- No. 38 Washburn men's tennis began its final weekend of regular season action with its second straight sweep, a 4-0 decision over No. 16 Ouachita Baptist, the top-ranked team in the Central Region. The Ichabods finish the regular season on Saturday against Southern Arkansas at 11 a.m.
Washburn got off to a quick start in doubles play with Tim Hammes and Santiago Rendon, ranked No. 17 togethern nationally, knocking off the No. 2 Tiger team 6-1. The No. 15 pairing of Sebastian Pjontek and Miquel Perez secured the doubles point for the Ichabods with a 6-2 victory over No. 5 Alex Blanchar and Phil Exner.
Yoshinobu Nakatsuji and Daniel Bird trailed 4-1 at No. 3 doubles but the match was left unfinished after Washburn clinched.
In singles play it was the bottom of Washburn's lineup that did the damage early and often, beginning with Daniel Harkin winning a pair of 6-2 sets from No. 6 to earn the Ichabods' second point, needing just over an hour to do so. On court five Bird began his match with a dominant 6-1 victory in set one and followed it up with a 6-3 victory in the second set.
The match was clinched and ended by Rendon at No. 4 with him also winning back-to-back sets by a 6-2 score for Washburn's second straight sweep.
At No. 3 Perez had won his first set 7-5 and trailed in the second when the match was halted. No. 49 Pjontek lost 7-6(4) in the opener to No. 5 Exner but led 2-1 in the second set. No. 28 Hammes lost 7-5 in the first set to No. 23 Blanchar and trailed 4-3 in the second before the match was decided.
