TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 23 Washburn women's tennis closed out conference play with second straight 6-1 victory, defeating Newman (9-7, 2-4 MIAA). The Ichabods (12-6, 6-1 MIAA) take on Ouachita Baptist in Arkadelphia, Arkansas on Friday.
Washburn began its day at the top, on court one with a 6-0 win for No. 16 Maja Jung and Sonia Smagina. The Jets evened up doubles play with a 6-4 win over Issabella Pensavalle and Isabella Martensson at No. 2. Marta Torres and Casie Curry were able to clinch doubles in Washburn's favor, winning 6-2 from No. 3.
Torres kept rolling, kicking off singles action with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3. Smagina, ranked No. 2 nationally, followed with a swift 6-3, 6-0 win on the top court. No. 24 Jung clinched the match from No. 2, winning in two sets, 6-3, 6-2.
Martensson began the second round of singles winning decisively at No. 4 with a 6-3 win in the first set followed by a 6-0 clinching set. Pensavalle fell 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 which gave Newman its first point of the match. Maddie Shelley followed with a two-set victory, adding another point to the Ichabod total with set scores of 6-2 and 6-3.
