ARKADELPHIA, Ar. -- No. 26 Washburn women's tennis won its third straight match, defeating Ouachita Baptist University via a 7-0 sweep on Friday afternoon. The Ichabods finish the regular season tomorrow against Southern Arkansas at 11 a.m.
Washburn's sweep began with a sweep of doubles play as well, No. 7 ranked Sonia Smagina and Maja Jung worked a quick 6-0 win at No. 1. Marta Torres and Casie Curry clinched the doubles point, winning 6-2 at No. 3. Isabella Martensson and Issabella Pensavalle completed the sweep on court two with a 6-4 victory.
Playing for the first time this season at No. 4, Torres had a quick match with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Maddie Shelley worked just as quickly, winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6. On the top court No. 2 ranked Smagina clinched the match with back-to-back 6-2 victories.
At No. 5 Pensavalle won her first set 6-2 and secured another point for the Ichabods winning 6-4 in the second. No. 22 Jung won a quick 6-1 set to open her match but had more of a battle in the second set before ultimately pulling away in the tiebreaker, winning 7-6(3). Curry secured Washburn's fifth sweep of the season with a tight 7-6(3) opening set win before finding her groove in the second set and winning 6-2.
