MAGNOLIA, Ar. -- No. 26 Washburn women's tennis closed out the regular season with a 4-1 victory over Southern Arkansas (11-13) for the Ichabods (14-6, 6-2) fourth straight victory. The Ichabods finish as the second seed in the MIAA and will play at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 2 in the MIAA Tournament semifinals.
Just like the day before, No. 7 Maja Jung and Sonia Smagina started doubles play for the Ichabods with a 6-2 win at No. 1. Casie Curry and Marta Torres once again clinched the opening point after claiming a 6-3 win on court three.
Isabella Martensson and Issabella Pensavalle were locked into a 5-5 battle at No. 2 that was left unfinished.
To begin singles play, No. 2 ranked Smagina needed less than an hour to dispatch of No. 62 Sarah Roy at No. 1, winning both sets 6-1. Torres won her second straight match at No. 4 with 6-1, 6-4 set scores to make it a 3-0 match.
On court two No. 22 Jung lost her opening set in a tiebreaker, 7-6(3), and in the second she fell 6-3 for the Muleriders' first point of the match. Playing at No. 5, Martensson won a pair of 6-1 sets to clinch the match for Washburn.
Curry fell 6-2 in her first set at No. 3 but rallied for a 7-6(3) win in the second set and was leading 3-0 in the third when the match was decided. Pensavalle won her opening set 6-1 at No. 6 and did not begin the second before play stopped.
