Washburn falls in game two at Pittsburg State

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Washburn baseball was unable to get its offense going on Saturday as Pittsburg State evened the series with a 10-1 victory. The regular season finale and series rubber match against the Gorillas will be Sunday at noon.

Pittsburg State (31-16, 21-11 MIAA) opened the scoring in the second inning with a leadoff home run to left field.

Washburn (28-20, 20-12 MIAA) got its first hit of the game in a big way in the top of the fourth with a no-doubter home run by Cale Savage to level the score.

The score didn't stay tied for long as Pittsburg State retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a two-RBI double and an unearned run to go up 4-1.

PSU added to its lead with a pair of two-run home runs in the sixth and another two-run homer in the seventh to push the lead to 10-1.

The Ichabod offense was quiet after the home run in the fourth inning and did not get a runner past second base after that as the Gorillas closed out the win.

Pittsburg State finished with an 8-5 advantage in hits and recorded four home runs and two doubles on the day. Savage had two of Washburn's hits and scored its lone run with his 11th homer of the season.

Jack Brimacombe (4-3) was tabbed with the loss after going five innings and surrendering four runs, three of which were earned, on three hits, four walks, and five strikeouts. Jake Schroeder pitched a scoreless eighth inning and allowed only one single while striking out two.
