TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- No. 23 Washburn women's tennis (11-6, 5-2) won its fourth ranked match of the season Saturday afternoon picking up a 6-1 road win over Northeastern State University (8-7, 3-3). The Ichabods return back to Topeka one final time to take on Newman on Tuesday.
The No. 16 ranked duo of Maja Jung and Sonia Smagina continued to roll in doubles play. They began the match with a 6-3 win at No. 1 in just over 30 minutes of action over No. 40 Emilia Cosatto and Alisha Moldakhemetova.
Casie Curry and Marta Torres fell in a 6-4 battle at No. 3, evening doubles up. Isabella Martensson and Issabella Pensavalle came back from an early deficit with a 7-5 win at No. 2, clinching the match's first point for the Ichabods.
Singles play started with a Washburn win on court two from No. 24 Jung, rebounding with swift 6-2, 6-0 sets. Torres added another point for the Ichabods at No. 3, winning 6-3 in her first set and finishing the match off with a 6-4 win.
At No. 6 Pensavalle fell 6-4, 6-0 resulting in the first point of the match for Northeastern State. No. 2 Smagina clinched the match for Washburn at No. 1, taking down No. 16 Cosatto 6-1 in the first set and 7-5 in the second. Just two minutes later Curry clinched her match in two sets at No. 4, winning 6-4, 6-3.
Martensson closed out the match at No. 5 in three sets, beginning with a 6-3 first set victory. She fell 6-4 in the second set but won the third set super-tiebreaker 10-5 to complete the 6-1 victory.
