Ichabods blank Emporia State in a Friday night non-conference battle

EMPORIA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabod soccer team improved to 4-1 on the season with a non-conference, 1-0 win over Emporia State on Friday night in Emporia over the Hornets in a match was that was moved from the ESU field to Emporia High School due to the campus field being unplayable. The Ichabods will be back in action on Sunday in another non-MIAA match up against Nebraska-Kearney at 2 p.m. in Kearney.

In the opening 45 minutes, both teams attempted three shots with Washburn's goalkeeper Raegan Wells picking up two saves in the frame. It was a physical first half as is the case when the two rivals face each other as the Hornets committed 11 fouls to the Ichabods' seven.

Neither team was able to break the deadlock until Ana Muruzabal scored her fourth goal of the season from outside the top of the box putting Washburn up 1-0 in the 75th minute.

The Ichabods kept the Hornets (0-3-2) off the board the remainder of the match holding on for the shutout win as Wells picked up her 31st career win in net tying Jenna Hatlestad for the most win in goal by an Ichabod keeper in program history.

Overall Wells had three saves for the win her 17th shutout of her career.

Khloe Schuckman had three shots and Riley Wells finished with two as did Murzazbal.
