No. 15 Ichabods win seventh straight with sweep of Tigers

TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 15 Washburn hit over .300 as a team for a second straight match Saturday afternoon and swept Fort Hays State 3-0. The Ichabods (8-1, 2-0 MIAA) have won seven matches in a row and will travel to face Missouri Southern at 6 p.m. next Friday, Sep. 22.

Washburn tallied at least 15 kills in every set to win 25-17, 25-12 and 25-20. The Tigers (6-5, 0-2 MIAA) hit .103 as a team and accumulated 19 errors against the Ichabods defense.

A kill by Rachel Schwensen sparked a 6-0 run which made the opening set 12-4. Fort Hays regained some ground with back-to-back blocks, pulling within five but never got closer than four. At 21-17 Washburn got a kill from Austin Broadie which sparked a 4-0 run to clean up the first set 25-17 as Sydney Conner connected with Rylee Unruh for a kill.

The Tigers got their first lead of the match going up 1-0 in the second set, and moved that lead up to 7-3 after forcing consecutive errors and landing an ace. From that point on it was all Washburn in the set. A service error on Fort Hays State ignited a 7-0 Ichabod run which included two kills from Unruh.

After the Tigers got two points back Washburn reeled off nine more points in a row, with kills from four different players. The home team hit a scorching .500 in the set with 15 kills to only three errors. Iyannah Jackson finished off the set with the last two kills to win 25-12.

Both teams split the first six points of the third set, Washburn was able to re-gain an advantage with Jalyn Stevenson knocking down a kill to make the set 9-5. The Ichabods created further separation with a 4-0 run with kills from Schwensen and Broadie sandwiched in the middle. Fort Hays State pulled as close as they had in any set knocking down a kill to set the score at 20-18.

A kill from Stevenson, ace from Emma Williams and block from Schwensen and Bella Limback gave Washburn back control. Stevenson and Broadie came through with the final two blows, giving the Ichabods a 25-20 and 3-0 win.

Washburn knocked down 46 kills in the match while hitting .303, the Tigers were limited to just 29 kills. The Ichabods also had advantages in assists, 45 to 25, and digs 43 to 31.

Stevenson led Washburn in both kills and digs with nine each while hitting .300. Broadie had eight kills with a .538 hitting percentage and added a team high six combined blocks. Corinna McMullen dished out 21 assists putting her over 1,000 in her career at 1,003 and added six digs for good measure. Conner had 19 assists to go along with eight digs.
