HAYS, Kan. -- No. 15 Washburn fell for the first time in conference play as Fort Hays State came away with a late goal to win 2-1 at home. The Ichabods return to play next on Nov. 1 when they take on Northwest Missouri State inside Yager Stadium at 6 p.m.
Early on in the match the Tigers (7-4-4, 4-3-2 MIAA) were able to get behind most of the Washburn (10-3-2, 7-1-1 MIAA) defense and find the back of the net on a shot going from right to left in the 20th minute. The goal snapped the Ichabod streak of not allowing a goal at 1,128 minutes and 11 seconds.
Even after the opening goal, Washburn generated more attempts at the net early before shots late in the half for Fort Hays State gave each side four shots after 45 minutes of play.
Coming out of the half the Ichabod offense created the first four shot attempts by either team. The fifth found the back of the net off the foot of Khloe Schuckman in the 65th minute after Belle Kennedy set her up with a pass in front of the net.
The Tigers went back out in front late in the 78th minute on a goal by Allison Worley from outside the box with her left foot into the top right corner of the net. Washburn continued to create more opportunities, outshooting Fort Hays State 3-1 the rest of the way but the score remained the same after 90 minutes.
The Ichabods managed 13 shots in the match with five going on goal while the Tigers took six total attempts with four on target. There were three corner kicks earned by Washburn as well while Fort Hays State managed just one.
Khloe Schuckman led the offense with four total shots with two going on target. Grace Peterson also had two shots on goal with three total attempts.
Alli Harrington managed two saves in goal for Washburn, playing all 90 minutes.
Worley and Taylor Hill had the goals for the home team, while Mackenzie Caldwell played all 90 minutes in goal for the Tigers and made four saves.
