EDMOND, Okla. – The Washburn Ichabods split a pair of games on the opening day of the Raising Canes Festival in Edmond, Okla. on Friday afternoon in games played at Deer Creek High School., Washburn will be back on the field Saturday afternoon with two more games starting at 3:30 p.m. with Southeastern Oklahoma State followed by a nightcap with Arkansas Tech to follow.
Game 1 – Washburn 9, Ouachita Baptist 0 (5 innings)
The Washburn Ichabods scored early and often jumping out to a 6-0 lead then adding three more two innings later rolling to the 9-0 win. Washburn pounded out 10 hits while holding the Tigers to two in the win.
In the first inning, after a leadoff walk drawn by
Marrit Mead, she would come around to score on an RBI ground out by
Autymn Schreiner.
In the second inning, the Ichabods scored five runs on four hits taking advantage of three Tiger errors. After
Mariah Wheeler walked,
Jaden LaBarge doubled and
Hailey Neira singled driving in Wheeler. Neira then would swipe second and scored on an RBI single by
Riley Stephens. A pair of Tiger errors loaded the bases and a wild pitch by OBU moved everyone up 60 feet. Another Tiger error scored Mead as Washburn went up 6-0.
After going scoreless in the top of the third, Washburn added three in the top of the fourth inning when Schreiner singled and then
Jaycee Ginter walked. Wheeler then cleared the bases with three-run homer to left wrapping up the scoring.
A total of 20 Ichabods appeared in the game.
Sadie Walker improved to 4-1 in the circle tossing three innings.
Sheyenne Cheek pitched 1 1/3 innings striking out two and
Rylee Moore came in and pitched the final 2/3 of the inning.
Ellington Hogle led Washburn's 10-hit attack with two hits.
Game 2 – Oklahoma Baptist 3, Washburn 2
Washburn fell a run shy in the second game of the afternoon dropping a 3-2 decision to Oklahoma Baptist.
Washburn (8-3) scored in its first at bat in the top of the first after Mead started the game after being hit by a pitch. Mead would swipe second and then Ginter singled down the left field line putting the Ichabods up 1-0.
Neither team would score until the Bison (4-5) scored two in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead. OBU added another in the bottom of the fifth pushing its lead to 3-1.
The Ichabods came back with a run in the top of the seventh when Neira legged out an infield single and with two outs, Mead tripled to left field scoring Neira pulling Washburn within one at 3-2. OBU struck out the final Ichabod batter to end the game.
Ginter finished with three hits and Neira had two for five of the Ichabods' seven hits.
