Ichabods tie program record with 29 runs to run rule Rockhurst

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn scored 25 unanswered runs between the second and fourth innings on its way to tying the program record for runs in a game defeating Rockhurst 29-19 in seven innings on Tuesday afternoon.

The Hawks (8-3) led early in the game scoring two runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. The Ichabods (7-7) got one run back in the bottom of the inning with Cale Savage scoring on a wild pitch after hitting a one-out double.

Max Clark got the start and after walking the leadoff batter in the second Charlie Kiefer took over on the mound. Rockhurst put together back-to-back hits with the second being a two-RBI double to make it 4-1 after one and a half played.

Washburn got the two runs back in the bottom of the inning first scoring on an error in the field and then on a RBI double into right center from Grant Jones to make it 4-3.

After a 1-2-3 inning from Kiefer on the mound the Ichabods took off at the plate in the third, tying the NCAA all-time record with six home runs in a single inning. It started with a leadoff homer from Savage. Hayden Priest doubled and scored on a Connor Scott home run. Jett Buck reached on an error and was moved to third on a Blake Scott single up the middle and Cal Watkins scored them both with a double to make it 8-4 with one out.

Jones walked and Payton McHarg blasted his MIAA leading 8th home run of the season over the right field wall to score three more. After Savage was walked this time Priest brought him home with a home run, his second extra base hit of the inning. Cash Jay went back-to-back with a solo shot to left center where the wind was blowing straight out and after a triple from Jett Buck, Blake Scott blasted the final long ball to center field, capping off a 13-run inning.

The run of runs continued in the fourth inning with Priest staying perfect for the day with an RBI single with one out. Connor Scott doubled to score Savage and Buck brought home Priest beating out a single to the shortstop. Blake Scott loaded the bases with an infield single and back-to-back walks from Watkins and Jones brought home two more runs.

Coming off the bench Shane Morrow pinch hit for a two-run single into right field and Seger Holman followed suit, doubling into left-center to score two more. Otto Jones capped off the scoring with a double of his own into the same gap, scoring Holman to leave the score at 26-4 after four innings.

With the wind blowing even harder than the innings before Kai Bennett surrendered six runs on five hits in the top of the fifth inning, with three coming on a home run. Washburn went down scoreless in the bottom of the inning to lead 26-10 through five.

Jake Schroeder took over on the mound in the sixth inning and the Hawks continued to chip away, scoring six runs on three hits with one error before Cole Warner came in from the bullpen. Rockhurst picked up three more hits and two more runs to give them 14 unanswered runs but trailed 26-18.

Holman walked to leadoff the sixth and moved to second and third on wild pitches before scoring on as the catcher tried to throw him out at third, resulting in a throwing error. Jones walked and scored on a double from Trey Adams and Teagan Tamiya completed the scoring for the Ichabods with a single through the left side to go up 29-18.

Warner stayed on in the top of the seventh and struck out the first two batters, with the second reaching on an error. He would later score on a double but the southpaw got out of the inning allowing just the one run to finish off the game with a seven-inning run rule.

All 15 hitters to step in the box for the Ichabods reached base at least once as they collected 26 hits and walked 10 times while striking out just five. Hayden Priest was 4-4 in the game scoring three runs and driving in three. Connor Scott went 3-4 and drove in three as well.

Washburn used five pitchers in the game with Charlie Kiefer going three innings and getting the win to move to 2-1 on the year. The Ichabods struck out six batters and allowed 17 hits with six walks.

Drew Cornelison led Rockhurst at the plate going 4-5 with three RBI. Jack Miller had two hits and drove in four while also pitching a scoreless final inning of action.
