MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Washburn scored the final seven runs of the game Saturday afternoon en route to a 8-3 win over Barry after trailing early. The Ichabods take on Nova Southeastern University at 11 a.m. on Sunday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Washburn (2-1) got the scoring started right away with Payton McHarg hitting the first home run for the Ichabods this season with one out in the top of the first to go up 1-0.
Chase Torkelson got the start for Washburn and got through the first two innings only allowing one hit with no runs. The Bucs (1-3) doubled into left field to begin the inning and the next pitch was hit for a home run to put the home team in front 2-1.
Barry added another run in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out solo home run pushing the lead to 3-1. Washburn left at least one runner on base in each of the first five innings but were able to move runners around in the sixth. Jett Buck began the inning with a single and a pair of walks from Blake Scott and Trevor McCollum loaded the bases for McHarg. He came through with a double into right-center to clear the bases and put the Ichabods ahead 4-3.
One batter later Easton Bruce brought him home with a single though the left side of the infield to cap off the four-run inning.
Torkelson finished his day exiting before the bottom of the sixth inning with a final line of five innings thrown, with three runs allowed on three hits with three strikeouts. Grant Zwald entered in relief and pitched one-two-three innings in the sixth and seventh.
The score stayed at 5-3 until the top of the ninth which was kicked off by Buck again with a single. A walk and hit batter loaded the bases, McHarg brought Buck home with a sacrifice fly and Cale Savage singled into right center to bring home the final two runs and make it 8-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth.
Zwald stayed on the mound and gave up two hits to load the bases but kept the Bucs at bay and shut the door for an 8-3 win and earned the save along the way. He finished the game with four scoreless innings picking up five strikeouts and allowing no walks. Torkelson moved to 1-0 on the year, picking up the win.
Washburn reached double digits in hits for a second time this season with 11, working nine walks as well. McHarg led the way at the plate with three hits driving in five runs and scoring two himself. Bruce and Jett Buck each had two hits and Savage reached base three times with a hit and two walks, driving in two.
On the mound Zwald and Torkelson combined for eight strikeouts, allowing only five hits and only walking four.
