FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Washburn baseball never led Sunday afternoon as they fell to a hot-hitting Nova Southeastern squad 17-2. The Ichabods finish their time in Florida against Lynn University on Monday morning at 9:30 a.m. CST.
The Sharks (3-1) started scoring in the bottom of the first getting one run across on two hits and a pair of walks. Washburn got runners on base in each of the first two innings but they were left there leaving them scoreless.
Max Clark got the start for the Ichabods (2-2) after the game was delayed more than three hours due to weather in the area. He went 2.1 innings allowing three runs with three strikeouts. Nova Southeastern scored a second run in the second inning and two more in the third.
Washburn got its first run in the fourth after a leadoff walk by Easton Bruce. He moved to third on a pair of wild pitches and was brought home by Trey Adams on an RBI groundout. Fidel Hatch came in from the bullpen in the third and was able to hold the Sharks scoreless for the first time in the fourth inning.
In the top of the fifth Cal Watkins led off with a double and scored after an error in the infield on a ball hit by Trevor McCollum to make it a 4-2 game.
Hatch retired the NSE offense in the fifth but the Sharks were able to score one in the sixth. Hatch finished the day tossing 3.1 innings, striking out four and allowing just one run.
In the seventh Nova Southeastern faced three Ichabod pitchers and scored seven runs on four hits, a pair of walks and a hit batter making the game 12-2. The Sharks added five runs in the eighth with the first three coming on a home run and would hold Washburn scoreless the rest of the way.
The Ichabods managed eight hits on the day, with Cal Watkins and Ike Book each picking up two. Fourteen different players received an at-bat in the game. Washburn's pitching staff struck out 10 over eight innings while allowing 16 hits.
