ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- Washburn secured its third straight series victory to begin MIAA play with a 10-3 win over Missouri Western State in game two of the series on Sunday afternoon. The Ichabods and Griffons will square off one more time on Monday at 1 p.m.
Trevor McCollum led off the game with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch before scoring on an error on a ball hit by Cash Jay. Cooper Carlgren started for Washburn (11-8, 6-2 MIAA) and tossed a 1-2-3 first inning. Missouri Western (12-8, 4-4 MIAA) scored its only run of the game on Carlgren in the second inning on a hit batter, single and sacrifice fly to even the game.
Another walk from McCollum and passed ball put him on second base in the third inning. Payton McHarg traded places with him, doubling to left field. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored as Jay hit into a fielders choice to make it a 3-1 game.
After giving up a leadoff single in the second Carlgren set down the next 14 hitters the Griffons sent to the plate going into the sixth inning and allowing the Ichabod offense to create separation.
A leadoff walk from Connor Scott was followed by a double by Ike Book to put two runners on. Trey Adams walked and all three runners advanced on a balk, scoring one run. Cal Watkins plated another on an RBI groundout and Washburn led 5-1 after four.
Hayden Priest hit a double with one-out in the fifth, scoring Cale Savage who had walked to lead off the inning. Scott walked and Priest was moved to third on a pop fly. With two outs Priest and Scott executed a double steal and the Ichabods had another two-run inning.
Back-to-back singles from McCollum and McHarg led off the sixth and Savage scored McCollum with a sac fly to add another run. In the seventh Scott was hit by a pitch and stole second, moving to third on a throwing error. Book grounded out to bring him home. Washburn made it six straight innings getting on the board in the eighth on a solo home run from Jay to go up 10-1.
Carlgren exited in the seventh inning with two outs and nobody on. Jayden Payne took over on the mound and the Ichabods finished off the inning with Scott, Watkins and Jay combining to get the final out of the inning at third base on a would-be triple.
Missouri Western added two runs in the bottom of the ninth with a two-run double but Payne was able to finish off the game and secure the series victory.
Washburn allowed a season-low three runs with Carlgren throwing 6.2 innings and allowing just one run on three hits with a pair of strikeouts to get the win in the game. Payne finished off the final 2.1 innings.
The Ichabods had just six hits in the game but were patient, working 10 walks. Payton McHarg was the only hitter with a multi-hit day as he picked up two knocks. Cash Jay drove in a team-high three runs.
