WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 5 Washburn had to go two days against No. 18 Cameron after the Friday morning match was delayed due to rain and suspended twice, finally concluding over 22 hours after it began on Saturday morning. The Ichabods play later in the day taking on No. 13 Midwestern State at 2 p.m.
Doubles play began with the Aggies (2-2) taking the upper hand as Peyton Koper and Isabella Martensson fell 6-2 at No. 2. Renske Ubachs and Maddie Shelley evened the match back up with a 6-3 win at No. 3. Washburn took the doubles point with No. 5 Lara Schmid and Maja Jung pulling away for a 6-4 win on the first court over No. 34 Vasilisa Polunova and Magda Wawrowska.
The Ichabods (7-1) went up 2-0 in the match as No. 73 Koper moved quickly through two sets, losing only one point combined at No. 3. Cameron got on the board with No. 3 Jung losing for the first time this spring, falling 6-3 in each of the first two sets at No. 1. Schmid lost her opening set 6-3 at No. 4 but rallied to win each of the next two sets 6-1 to set up match point for Washburn.
No. 48 Ubachs started with a quick 6-3 win in her first set on court two. She took the second set to an extra point before falling 7-5 and the third set went to the Aggies as well, 6-4.
The match was suspended for the day with Cadence Lynn and Martensson in the beginning of their second sets at No. 5 and No. 6 respectively. When play resumed at 8:30 a.m. the next morning Lynn fell 6-2 in the second set after coming up short in her first set tiebreaker, 7-6(5). Martensson won her opening set 6-3 and led early in the second and was able to finish it off in 10 minutes the next morning, winning 6-4 to clinch the match.
