WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 5 Washburn held leads early but were unable to stay in front of No. 13 Midwestern State, falling 4-3 on the road on Saturday. The Ichabods finish the roadtrip against UT Tyler at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
Washburn began doubles play with a win from Renske Ubachs and Maddie Shelly at No. 3, 6-2. They secured the match's first point with No. 5 Lara Schmid and Maja Jung winning 7-5 on the top court. Peyton Koper and Isabella Martensson were locked at 6-6 when the doubles point was decided.
The Mustangs evened the match as No. 3 Jung fell 6-4 in her first set and lost a tiebreaker 7-2 in the second at No. 1. Koper, ranked No. 73, won her opening set 7-5 and followed with a 6-3 win to take the point from No. 4. No. 48 Ubachs forced a tiebreaker in her first set before falling 7-6(2). The second set also needed an extra point to reach a decision, that time she fell 7-3 in the tiebreaker.
Schmid fell 6-4 in her opening set at No. 3, in the second she bounced back to win 6-2. After keeping it close early she fell 6-3 in the third set. Martensson evened up the match at three winning 6-2 and 6-1 sets from No. 6. Cadence Lynn opened her match losing 6-0 in the first set but had a quick recovery to win 6-4 in the second. She fell 6-3 in the third set from No. 5, deciding the match.
