KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Washburn was unable to get its offense going on Wednesday afternoon in a 6-1 loss to Rockhurst on the road. The Ichabods return home for a three-game series with Central Oklahoma beginning Friday.
The Hawks (23-14) opened up the scoring for the game in the bottom of the first with an RBI groundout after a leadoff single was moved over to third. Washburn (23-17) got the run right back the next half inning. Blake Scott reached on an error, advancing to second. Connor Scott moved him to third and Grant Jones brought him in with a single to center field to tie it.
Charlie Kiefer, who got his second start of the season, settled in on the mound, throwing the next two innings scoreless, allowing just one hit. In the fourth, Rockhurst got back-to-back one-out hits to put two on. Another RBI groundout brought a run in to give them the lead.
In the fifth the Hawks added three to their total, scoring one on back-to-back singles along with a throwing error. They scored two more on a two-run home run to left to go up 5-1. After a leadoff error in the sixth Rockhurst had one on base in scoring position. The runner moved to third on a groundout and scored on a single up the middle to make it a 6-1 game.
The Ichabods used Logan Bartlett and Gavin Wilhelm on the mound over the final two innings to keep the Hawks off the board. Washburn's offense was able to get anything else going, with just one hit in the final three innings
Washburn's pitching staff combined to strike out four while walking three in the game and allowing eight hits. The Ichabod hitters had seven hits with three coming from Cale Savage who went 3-4 in the game with a double. No other hitter had more than one hit.
