WICHITA, Kan. -- After trailing by as many as seven Washburn rallied to make it a one-run game but were unable to complete the comeback, falling 12-11 to Newman in game two. The Ichabods will wrap up the series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
Just like in game one Washburn (18-16, 12-10 MIAA) got out to a fast start after a leadoff single form Payton McHarg. He moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single up the middle off the bat of Cash Jay. A single from Hayden Priest and a walk from Connor Scott loaded the bases for Grant Jones who was able to work another walk and plate another run.
Cooper Carlgren (9-28) set the Jets down in order in the bottom of the first to begin the game. Newman was able to put together a single and a triple in the second to get on the board. In the third the Jets got a leadoff single and a pair of walks to load the bases. A double into left field cleared the bases and gave them the lead. A single to score another run capped off the inning and made it 5-2 after four.
In the fifth Jett Buck led off with a single that turned into three bases after an error. Jay brought him home with a sacrifice fly to cut into the lead. The Jets got the run right back on back-to-back doubles to lead off the home half of the inning. Gavin Wilhelm finished off the inning and held the lead where it was.
An inning later the lead did grow after Newman loaded the bases with no outs on an error, walk and a single. A fielders choice scored one run, a single brought in two and a sacrifice fly completed the inning which put the Ichabods down by seven runs.
After a scoreless seventh Jay led off the eighth with a single and moved to third on a single by Priest before scoring on a balk. Scott singled and Otto Jones walked to load the bases. Blake Scott pinch hit and worked a walk to plate another run and McHarg made it a one-run game with a grand slam to right field.
In the bottom of the inning a hit batter and a double put two in scoring position for Newman. With two outs they got a single into left field to score both and make it 12-9 heading into the ninth.
Jay walked to lead off the inning and moved to third on an error that allowed Cale Savage to reach base. Priest brought Jay home with a single with no outs. Savage was moved to third and was able to score on a wild pitch but that is all the Ichabods would get in their last at bat.
Washburn had 10 hits in the game with three coming from Hayden Priest. Connor Scott, Cash Jay and Payton McHarg each had two hits with McHarg driving in four.
