Washburn blasts past Jets with eight home runs in 21-16 win

WICHITA, Kan. -- Washburn broke the 20-run mark for a second time this season with a 21-16 win over Newman in the final game of the series with the Jets. The Ichabods are back in action at Falley Field at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9.

Washburn (19-16) continued to score early getting a leadoff single from Payton McHarg. Cale Savage followed with his own single and Cash Jay kept the line moving with a double into left, scoring McHarg. Hayden Priest brought both home with his own double into right field to make it 3-0.

Chase Torkelson set Newman down with a scoreless bottom of the first. In the second the Jets got on the board with a solo home run. They scored a second run after a single, double and RBI grounder. In the next half inning the Ichabods got the two runs back with a pair of solo homers, first from Jett Buck and two batters later by Cal Watkins.

Newman got a leadoff triple in the third and scored the run with another groundout to make it 5-3. Savage singled to lead off the fourth and Jay quickly brought him home, hitting a two-run shot to left. One batter later Buck blasted his second solo home run of the game which pushed the lead to five. The Jets didn't go away, responding with a pair of home runs of their own in the bottom of the inning which totaled three runs and brought the score to 8-7 after four.

Trevor McCollum doubled to lead off the fifth and stayed on second base until there were two outs and Jay brought him home with a double to left. Priest didn't leave Jay on base long, clearing the bases with a two-run home run to right. The Ichabods went to the bullpen in the fifth and Newman was able to plate two runs on three singles and a walk to cut the lead in half.

Washburn scored for a fourth straight inning in the sixth thanks to a two-out solo home run from McCollum. The Jets got the run back with a hit batter and a double in the bottom of the frame. A solo home run in the seventh for Newman brought them within one but that is as close as they would get the rest of the way.

In the eighth Grant Jones and McHarg walked to put two on. Savage and Jay hit back-to-back singles that each plated one runner. Savage was able to score on a wild pitch and Buck brought Jay home on a sacrifice fly to center. Priest capped off the five-run inning as he was able to dash home on a wild pitch to make the game 17-11. A walk, double and RBI groundout scored another run for Newman in the bottom of the inning.

In the ninth Watkins led off with his second home run of the day. Jones and McHarg both walked and Savage pushed the Ichabods over 20 runs with a three-run shot to right field. The Jets were able to put together five hits with one home run that brought home four runs but Washburn held on to win the final game of the series.

The Ichabods tallied 21 hits in the game, second most in a game this season, led by four each from Jay and Savage. They also hit eight home runs, second most in a game in program history with six different players hitting one out, Watkins and Buck each went yard twice. Jay drove in a game-high five runs while Savage and Priest each plated four in the victory.

On the mound Washburn sat down 13 Jet batters via strikeout while walking just five. Chase Torkelson threw four innings in his start, striking out four and allowing seven hits.
