WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Washburn could not come back from an early deficit as they fell 4-2 to Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday afternoon. The Ichabods are back in action on Sunday at 12 p.m. CST against No. 22 Nova Southeastern.
Neither team got on the board or had a baserunner in the first inning. Washburn (1-5) worked a pair of walks in the second but were unable to bring them around. Cooper Carlgren got the start for the Ichabods and had the bases loaded with one out after a pair of walks and a single. The Sailfish got to two outs before a wild pitch brought in one run to make it 1-0.
In the third inning Palm Beach Atlantic (2-4) led off with a triple and the run scored on an RBI groundout. The next inning the home team added a run on a solo home run to lead off the inning. Washburn was held without a hit until Jackson Mervosh slashed a two-out single in the top of the fifth. They were unable to bring the run around, leaving two on the bases.
After a scoreless bottom of the fifth from Carlgren, Darian Duhon led off the sixth with a single. Payton McHarg was hit by a pitch and Hayden Priest singled to load the bases. Easton Bruce shot a single through the right side, scoring two. The Ichabods didn't get any more runs across and trailed 3-2 after the top of the sixth.
In the bottom of the inning the Sailfish worked two walks and loaded the bases with a single. Fidel Hatch entered and was able to retire two batters. A single through the left side scored one run but that was all the home team got as Hatch got a groundout to end the inning.
Logan Bartlett took over on the mound in the seventh inning for Washburn. He and Keegan McDonald combined to toss a scoreless seventh. McDonald stayed on in the eighth and threw another scoreless frame. The Ichabods managed just one hit in the final two innings as they fell 4-2.
Both teams managed six hits in the game, while Washburn had a 5-4 advantage in walks. Darian Duhon went 2-4 at the plate for the Ichabods while Easton Bruce reached base twice with a pair of RBI.
The pitching staff for Washburn combined for seven strikeouts, with three each coming from Cooper Carlgren, who went four innings, and Keegan McDonald.
