FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Washburn ended a five-game skid on Sunday afternoon as they defeated No. 22 Nova Southeastern 5-3. The Ichabods finish out their time in Florida against Barry on Monday at 5 p.m. CST.
Caleb Lunnon got the start for Washburn (2-5) in its first game against a ranked opponent and threw a scoreless first inning. The game's scoring was opened up in the second inning with Garrett Springer recording his first hit and RBI on a two-out double to score Cash Jay who doubled earlier in the inning.
In the third inning the Sharks (5-3) got two runners on for the first time and Lunnon was able to work around the two-out rally and strand both. In Washburn's next time at the plate Hayden Priest led off with a single, Easton Bruce walked and Cash Jay was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A wild pitch scored one and Jett Buck followed with a double to score two more and go up 4-0.
The Ichabods added a run in the fifth as Priest doubled with one out and stole third base. Bruce brought him home with a sacrifice fly. Nova Southeastern was able to get on the board the next inning, scoring twice on a pair of walks, an error and a fielders choice RBI groundout. Griffin Huiatt took over on the mound for Lunnon and another run scored after a second error and a wild pitch.
Grant Zwald took over on the mound in the seventh and threw a scoreless frame, he continued with another one in the eighth. Washburn's offense managed just one hit in the final three innings, a ninth inning single from Jackson Mervosh, and did not add to its total.
The score stayed the same heading to the bottom of the ninth. Zwald began on the mound, and was replaced by Blake Priest after one runner reached. One more Shark reached base but Priest was able to finish the game out with a strikeout and a groundout to secure the 5-3 victory.
Washburn out-hit Nova Southeastern 7-5, while the Sharks worked four walks to four for the Ichabods.
Both Garrett Springer and Hayden Priest had multiple hits at the plate for Washburn. Jett Buck reached twice and drove in two runs. On the mound Caleb Lunnon earned the win throwing 5.1 innings and striking out three with one earned run. Blake Priest got the first save of the season for the Ichabods.
