Five-run eighth thwarts Ichabods in series finale with Northwest Missouri

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Washburn closed out its road series with Northwest Missouri on Monday afternoon with a 11-6 loss. The Ichabods stay busy, returning home to face Augustana at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

After neither team got on the board in the first inning it was the home squad that began the scoring for a second straight day. After a walk led off the second inning a two-run home run with one out gave the Bearcats a 2-0 lead. Washburn got one run back in the third with a bunt single by Connor Scott followed by Hayden Priest knocking a double into right center to score Scott.

In the fourth inning, the Bearcats led off with a home run. Three walks, two coming with two outs, loaded the bases. A pair of singles scored all three runners to make it a 6-1 lead after four.

In the top of the fifth Scott placed a one-out single on the left side of the infield before moving to second on a groundout. Once again, Priest scored him, this time with a single. The next Ichabod trip to the plate Jett Buck slashed one more run off the lead with a solo home run, making it a 6-3 ballgame.

After entering in the fifth, Logan Bartlett threw two clean innings in the fifth and sixth to keep the Bearcats off the board. At the plate, Washburn continued to chip away using the long ball, this time as Payton McHarg went yard with one-out in the seventh. Priest followed with a single and moved to third on a double by Cash Jay. With two outs Buck laced a double into left-center, scoring both to tie the game.

Bartlett and Kai Bennett combined to throw a scoreless bottom of the seventh. In the eighth inning the Bearcats got two on with a hit batter and a walk. A single into left field broke the tie, followed by a double to score two more. A walk followed by a single made it 11-6 heading into the ninth. Washburn's offense was unable to rally in the top of the inning as the series came to a close.

Both teams managed 10 hits in the game, with the difference in offensive production coming on 15 walks for the Bearcat batters to just one walk for the Ichabods. Six pitchers took the mound for Washburn, combining for six strikeouts.

At the plate both Hayden Priest and Connor Scott had three hits in the game. Jett Buck had a pair of hits and drove in a team-high three runs.
