No. 5 Washburn tops No. 9 Bisons 6-1 in top-10 battle

EDMOND, Okla. -- No. 5 Washburn picked up its third top-10 victory of the season, knocking off No. 9 Harding 6-1 in a Saturday afternoon neutral court battle. The Ichabods are right back in action against Ouachita Baptist on Sunday at 10 a.m. in Edmond.  

Doubles play started on the top court with Matthew Earle and Tim Hammes breezing to a 6-2 win for Washburn (9-2). Zino Nahirniak and Moritz Pieper provided the first point of the match, winning 6-3 at No. 3. Tommy Cecchetti and Vasek Schneider played an extra game at No. 2, but completed an Ichabod sweep, winning 7-5.  

In singles play Pavlos Parson began the action winning a pair of 6-3 sets at No. 4. Tim Hammes won his first set 6-3 at No. 1. He came away with a 7-6(6) tiebreaking win in the second to win the top-10 ranked battle with No. 9 Cas de Ruiter of the Bisons. Harding got on the board as Matthew Earle fell, 7-5 and 6-2 at No. 3.  

After falling 6-4 in the first set, Vasek Schneider bounced back to win 6-3 in the second and 6-2 in the third at No. 2, clinching the match for Washburn. Tommy Cecchetti added another point, winning 6-3 in the first set and 6-4 in the third after losing a 7-6(0) tiebreaker at No. 5. Zino Nahirniak opened his dual playing an extra game but winning 7-5. He fell 6-1 in the second but rebounded with a 10-7 supertiebreaker win to close out the match.
