Ichabods swept by Lopers at home in softball doubleheader

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabod softball team was on the wrong end of a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Nebraska-Kearney falling 3-2 and 8-5 on Saturday at Gahnstrom Field. Washburn will be back in action next weekend hosting Central Missouri and Newman in back-to-back MIAA games starting on Friday, April 4.

Game 1 – UNK 3, WU 2
All five runs in the game came in the fourth inning as the Lopers took advantage of an Ichabod error scoring three unearned runs.

In the fourth, Makenzie Sais walked to start the inning and after a Kaylee Wagner single, Sais moved to third. Ashlyn Gaughan came in as a pinch runner and the Ichbods pulled off a double steal scoring Sais.

Erin Boles then drove in Alexis Tanguma cutting the Loper lead to 3-2.

However, the Ichabods were limited to one hit the rest of the way in the loss.

Washburn was held to four hits with four different Ichabods collecting one leaving four runners on base.

Sadie Walker tossed five innings allowing three unearned runs.

Game 2 – UNK 8, WU 5
Washburn (24-15, 6-6 MIAA) scored two runs in the its first at bat after Ellington Hogle started the game with a single and then Wagner's 2-run homer staked the Ichabods to the early lead.

UNK came back with one run in the top of the second, but the Ichabods went back up 3-2 on a sac fly from Hogle that scored Jaden LaBarge.

In the third, UNK hit a 2-run homer of its own tying the score at 3-3.

In the fourth, UNK scored three runs on four hits to go up 6-3. A lead off homer by LaBarge in the bottom of the fourth on a two-strike pitch pulled the Ichabods within two at 6-4.

Boles began the sixth inning with a solo home run of her own trimming the Loper lead to 6-4, but UNK scored two more in the top of the seventh and the Ichabods were shutout in the inning as the Lopers closed out the win.

Boles, Wagner and LaBarge each had two of the Ichabods' nine total hits. Tanguma took the loss in the circle.
