EDMOND, Okla. -- Washburn went 3-0 on the day in doubles and will take up three of four semifinal positions in the singles bracket after a strong day two of the ITA Central Region Championships on Friday. Day three action will begin again at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
Washburn continued to cruise in doubles play, beginning with Benjamin Fock and Nicolas Hurtado-Novoa advancing into the quarterfinal round with an 8-3 win. Keita Kuroda and Gael Mourmant joined them with the freshman duo winning an 8-7(4) tiebreaker in the round of 16. Kilian Martinez and Yuto Miyagawa made quicker work, winning 8-3 to give the Ichabods three teams in the quarterfinals.
In singles action Kilian Martinez cruised through his round of 16 match and battled through three sets in the quarterfinals before pulling away late with a victory. Benjamin Fock led one set to none and 3-1 in the second set when his opponent retired. In the quarterfinals he won in two sets, setting up an all-Washburn semifinal dual.
On the other side of the bracket Nicolas Hurtado-Novoa played an extra game in his second set but fell in two in the round of 16. Yuto Miyagawa won an opening-set tiebreaker and took the second set to advance out of the round of 16. He cruised through his next match, winning in two sets and advancing into the semifinals.
