TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn fell for the first time at home on Saturday afternoon losing 4-3 to No. 23 MSU Denver in a game delayed three hours by rain. The Ichabods will wrap up the Steve Anson Classic at 2 p.m. on Sunday against Sioux Falls.
Maclane FInley got the ball and was in command early, holding the Roadrunners (9-1) without a hit through the first four innings. The first hit of the game for either team didn't come until Jarrett Herrmann slashed a single in the bottom of the fourth for Washburn (2-4).
MSU Denver got on the board in the fifth, with a leadoff double followed by a bunt and sacrifice fly. After two walks and a single by Ian Luce, the Ichabods had the bases loaded in the home half. Jackson Mervosh slashed a single into right center to score two and go in front.
The visitors responded back scoring three in the sixth on two hits and a hit batter making it 4-2. Max Strash finished off the sixth inning on the mound. Mark Hoffmann followed him in the seventh tossing a scoreless inning. Washburn left the bases loaded in the seventh but was able to score one in the eight, on a single by Brant Beeby to make it 4-3.
The Ichabods went down in order in the bottom of the ninth to fall on day two of the Steve Anson Classic.
Both teams had five hits in the game while Washburn worked nine walks to only four for the Roadrunners. Three pitchers combined to throw all nine for the Ichabods, striking out six.
Ian Luce had the only multi-hit day going 2-4 with a walk in the leadoff spot.
