TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn was unable to get going on offense Sunday afternoon, falling 8-1 to Sioux Falls in the final game of the Steve Anson Classic. The Ichabods return to action on the road for a three-game series against Newman beginning Friday.
Kai Bennett got the start for Washburn (2-5) in the home-opening weekend finale. He escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first inning without allowing a run. He settled in on the mound after that striking out the side and throwing three consecutive scoreless innings keeping the Cougars (1-3) off the board.
In the fifth inning Sioux Falls got a runner on with a single and with two outs got a line drive into the outfield that rolled to the wall after a dive attempt and landed for an inside-the-park home run to go up 2-0.
In the home half of the inning Eli Dean turned a misplay in the outfield into a triple. With two outs Washburn got on the board with an error in the field to cut the lead in half.
Max Clark took over on the mound for Bennett in the sixth and struck out the side to keep the deficit the same. In the seventh a pair of Ichabod errors in the field led to three unearned runs in the inning with the lead growing 5-1.
In the eighth inning another error in the field allowed one of what would be three runs to score in the inning for Sioux Falls. Washburn got a leadoff double from Jackson Mervosh in the bottom of the inning but were unable to cut into the deficit. The score stayed the same through the ninth inning to wrap up the tournament.
The Cougars out-hit the Ichabods 8-5 in the game while also walking eight times to four for the home squad. Washburn committed four of five errors in the game.
Seven pitchers appeared for the Ichabods striking out 12 in the game. Kai Bennett went five innings with five K's and two earned runs. At the plate Jackson Mervosh, Jarrett Herrmann and Eli Dean each reached twice, all with one hit and a walk.
