WICHITA, Kan. -- Washburn took its first series win of the season in as many chances on Saturday afternoon with a 15-6 win over Newman on the road. The Ichabods will wrap up the series on Sunday at noon.
With two outs in the first inning Easton Wasinger walked and followed by Levi Risenhoover's team-leading third home run of the season to go up 2-0. Maclane Finley got the start for Washburn (4-5, 2-0 MIAA) and delivered three scoreless innings to begin the game.
In the third the Ichabods added two more with two outs. A pair of hit batters came around to score first on an error then on a double by Chase Littrell into left field to go up 4-0. In the fourth inning singles by Brooks Richardson and Ian Luce scored one aided by an error in the field. With two outs Trenton Barry shot a single into center that plated another pair and moved the lead to 7-0.
Newman (2-10, 0-2 MIAA) got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, stringing together four hits in the inning to score four runs and pull within three. The score stayed the same into the sixth where the Ichabods loaded the bases with no outs. Risenhoover and Barry each worked walks to bring home a run. An error in the field brought home two more and Trey West hit a sacrifice fly to complete the five-run inning.
The Jets answered with one run in both the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings. Kuyper Kendall took over on the mound in the middle of the seventh inning and finished it out before tossing a scoreless eighth. An RBI single by Jackson Mervosh and sacrifice fly from Brant Beeby each scored one early in the ninth inning. Littrell tacked on another run with a bases loaded walk to make it 15-6. After a scoreless ninth from Carter Poole that is how the score stayed in game two of the series.
Newman ended the game out-hitting Washburn 11-10 while the Ichabods had a 13-6 advantage in walks while also being hit by pitched three times and swiping six total bases. The Jets committed six errors in the field with one for the visitors on the scoreboard.
Four pitchers for Washburn combined for eight strikeouts. Maclane Finley earned the win throwing 5.0 innings with three strikeouts and allowing four runs. Poole struck out three in his one inning.
Ian Luce and Brooks Richardson both half multi-hit days with two each. Trenton Barry was 1-2 with three RBI, three walks and two stolen bases. Levi Risenhoover scored four runs while driving in three and going 1-2 with two walks and was hit by pitches twice as well.
