BENTONVILLE, Ark. – The Washburn Ichabod softball team split a pair of games on Saturday topping William Jewell 9-0 in five innings before being blanked in the nightcap in a 7-0 loss to Southeastern Oklahoma State. The Ichabods will wrap up the weekend trip to Arkansas with Truman at 11 a.m. on Sunday morning.
Game 1 – WU 9, William Jewell 0 (5 innings)
Washburn used a pair of big innings and a dominant pitching performance to roll past William Jewell 9-0 in five innings on Saturday in Bentonville, improving to 6-1 on the season.
The Ichabods struck first in the second when
Madi Moore blasted a solo home run, giving Washburn an early 1-0 lead. The game broke open in the third as Washburn plated five runs.
Makenzie Sais sparked the rally with a single and stole both second and third before scoring on an RBI single by
Erin Boles. After an error extended the inning and loaded the bases,
Danielle Schlader crushed a grand slam, with all four runs scoring unearned, pushing the advantage to 6-0.
Washburn added three more in the fourth. Sais again created havoc on the bases with a walk and two stolen bases before coming home on a
Dalaney Anderson RBI single. Moore followed with a two-run double scoring Anderson and
Aspen Burgardt, stretching the lead to 9-0.
Moore finished a perfect 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and three RBI to pace Washburn's 10-hit attack. Schlader drove in four with her third-inning grand slam, while Boles and Anderson each added an RBI. Sais scored twice and stole four bases, constantly pressuring the William Jewell defense.
In the circle,
Sadie Walker earned the win moving to 4-0 on the season, tossing three shutout innings and allowing two hits while striking out two.
Jalin Lavers and
Kendra Cook combined to finish the shutout as the trio limited William Jewell to three hits and no runs. Washburn committed just one error defensively.
The Ichabods totaled nine runs on 10 hits and left four on base, while William Jewell was held scoreless on three hits.
Game 2 – Southeastern Oklahoma State 7, WU 0
Washburn was limited to four hits as Southeastern Oklahoma State handed the Ichabods a 7-0 setback Saturday afternoon in Bentonville in their second game of the day, dropping Washburn to 6-2 on the season.
The Savage Storm broke through in the second inning, scoring four runs with two outs. A two-run single by Tristan Hopkins opened the scoring and Emily Simmons followed with a two-run double to put Southeastern Oklahoma in front 4-0.
Washburn threatened early, putting runners in scoring position in each of the first two innings, but could not capitalize. Sais singled and stole two bases in the first and Burgardt added a second-inning single, yet the Ichabods stranded four runners through the opening frames.
Southeastern Oklahoma added insurance in the sixth when India McMurray launched a three-run home run to center, extending the lead to 7-0.
Alyson Malone kept the Washburn offense off balance throughout, tossing a complete-game shutout with 10 strikeouts and one walk. Schlader, Sais, Burgardt and
Taylor Brees recorded the Ichabods' four hits.
Kierra Goos took the loss, allowing four runs in 1.2 innings. Walker worked 4.1 innings in relief, striking out four while giving up three runs, and Sprague added a scoreless seventh inning.
