FORT SMITH, Ark. -- No. 18 Washburn won the penultimate match of the regular season with a 7-0 sweep of Arkansas-Fort Smith on Friday afternoon. The Ichabods wrap up the regular season facing Northeastern State on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. with a chance to secure a share of the MIAA Regular Season Championship.
Doubles play led off with Mariana Silva Balsa and Daniela Tijaro sweeping their match at No. 2, 6-0. Jasel Bailey and Saajida Razick pulled away late to win 6-4 on the top court and make it a doubles sweep for Washburn (16-3, 7-1 MIAA). Renske Ubachs and Riko Konno won by walkover at No. 3.
No. 28 Renske Ubachs led off singles by taking another point for the Ichabods in under an hour with 6-1 and 6-0 set victories on the top court. Jasel Bailey added the match-clinching point at No. 4 sweeping two sets 6-0. With the Lions unable to bring an opponent to court six Washburn won another point by walkover.
Daniela Tijaro added another point on court three, she grinded out a 6-4 opening set win before sweeping her second set. No. 57 Riko Konno won 6-2 in her first set and 6-4 in the second to continue the streak of two-set wins at No. 2. Charlotte Bair wrapped up the match dropping just one game to win in two sets at No. 5.
