TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 17 Washburn won its outdoor home-opener defeating Nebraska Kearney 6-1 on Tuesday morning. The Ichabods are back in action on Wednesday hosting Fort Hays State at 2 p.m.
Renske Ubachs and Riko Konno led off the match cruising to a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles. Daniela Tijaro and Mariana Silva Balsa were just behind winning 6-1 at No. 3, clinching the doubles point for Washburn (11-3, 2-1 MIAA). Saajida Razick and Jasel Bailey built and early lead and held on to win 6-3 on the top court to sweep doubles.
No. 25 Renske Ubachs kept the Lopers (7-8, 1-3 MIAA) off the board as she won a pair of 6-2 sets at No. 1. Saajida Razick added another point, winning 6-2 in the first and 6-1 in the second set on court four to bring up match point. Daniela Tijaro clinched the match on court three, winning 6-1 in her opening set and closing the match with a 6-3 win in the second.
After falling 4-6 in the first set Jasel Bailey bounced back to win 6-1 in her second set at No. 5. She carried the momentum into a 10-4 ten-point tiebreaker win. No. 53 Riko Konno fell 3-6 in her first set on court two but battled in the second to force a tiebreaker where she fell 7-6(0) as Nebraska Kearney got on the board. Mariana Silva Balsa lost a 7-6(3) tiebreaker in her first set at No. 6 but came back to win 6-1 in the second and 10-3 in the ten-point third set to close out the match.
