TOPEKA, Kan. -- Defensive miscues and hot bats of No. 5 Pittsburg State were too much for Washburn as they fell 16-4 in game two of the series. The Ichabods will wrap up the regular season with senior day beginning at 12:25 on Sunday with first pitch at 1 p.m.
After a scoreless first inning on the mound from Maclane Finley the offense put Washburn (20-26, 16-19 MIAA) up just two batters into the game. Trenton Barry led off with a single and Ian Luce followed with a home run in a second straight game, this one to left field to go up 2-0. The Gorillas (40-8, 27-8 MIAA) answered back with three runs in the second to go in front.
Two free passes followed by a single scored a run in the third. A pair of errors brought in two more runs with two more scoring on singles as Pittsburg State went up 8-2. The score stayed that way until the fifth inning when Jack Borgmann was able to connect on a 1-1 pitch for a two-run homer scoring Barry and cutting the deficit to four.
The Gorillas led off the sixth with a solo home run and followed with two more hits to score another run. A sacrifice fly scored another run before four straight hits from the visitors drove in five more runs and made it 16-4. Washburn got just one hit in the final two innings as the game closed after seven innings.
Pittsburg State led 17-7 in hits and 6-1 in walks drawn while all three errors in the game were committed by the Ichabods. Five pitchers took the mound for Washburn. Maclane Finley went three innings in his start; Brian Wamsher tossed two innings allowing one earned run out of the bullpen.
Jack Borgmann and Ian Luce each homered as Luce was the only Ichabod to pick up multiple hits going 2-4 with two RBI.
