TOPEKA, Kan. -- For the first time this season Washburn has earned a Central Region Player of the Week honor as Gavin Wilhelm was named the NCBWA Central Region Pitcher of the Week by the organization on Wednesday afternoon.

Wilhelm earns the honor after being named the MIAA Pitcher of the Week on Monday. It is the first regional Pitcher of the Week since Caleb Lunnon won the award in April of 2025. Wilhelm started the regular season finale for the Ichabods against No. 5 Pittsburg State on Saturday, May 2. He went 6.1 innings scoreless while allowing just one hit and two walks and striking out five to start what would become a 5-0 shutout victory for Washburn over the Gorillas. 

The Ichabods moved into the No. 8 seed in the MIAA Tournament and will face the No. 9 seed and host Central Oklahoma in the first round at 4 p.m. today, Wednesday, May 6 in Edmond, Okla.
