Setting the scene. . .
The Washburn Ichabods return home after beating Missouri Western on Saturday in St. Joseph for the first time in eight tries as thy play host to Missouri Southern at 1 p.m. in Yager Stadium. The Ichabods are 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the MIAA. The Lions are 4-1 overall with their only loss coming to then No. 6 Pittsburg State 31-28. MSSU is also 2-1 in MIAA play.

Bruce Steinbrock will be the play-by-play voice of the Ichabods and former WU quarterback Mark Elliott will be the color analyst, while Jan Lunsford will be on the sidelines.

The Coaches . . .
Washburn head football coach Craig Schurig was named head coach of the Ichabod football program Dec. 28, 2001. Schurig is 35-27 (.561) in his sixth season as the Ichabod head coach and he is 27-20 (.568) against the MIAA. He led the Ichabods their first MIAA title since joining the league and the first conference title since the Ichabods won the CSIC in 1983 in 2005. He was the 2005 MIAA Coach of the Year after leading the Ichabods to their first NCAA Playoffs and MIAA Championship. Schurig is 4-1 against the Lions.
Bart Tatum is 9-7 in his second year at MSSU. He is 0-1 against the Ichabods. He spent 12 seasons as an assistant coach at Northwest Missouri State. In his first season at Southern, Tatum led the Lions to a 5-6 record and a sixth place finish in the MIAA. 
 
Ichabods last time out . . .

Sept. 29, 2007 • Washburn 31, No. 24 Missouri Western 24 • ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods snapped an eight-game losing streak against No. 24 Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Mo., as the Ichabods topped No. 24 ranked Missouri Western 31-24. With the win, Washburn improves to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the MIAA while the Griffons fall to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in the MIAA.
Washburn put up 444 yards on 80 plays while the Ichabod defense held the Griffons to 246 yards overall.
Ichabod running back Ra'Shawn Mosley puts up the third best rushing total in Washburn history as he ran for 210 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries.
After the Griffons scored on their first drive of the game, the Ichabods put together a 12-play 80-yard drive capped by a 9-yard touchdown reception from Jordan Brill to Jake Lebahn with 3:06 left in the first quarter.
The Ichabods' Kyle O'Neal hit a 31-yard field goal with 11:50 in the second quarter wrapping up a 14-play drive which covered 77 yards.
Mosley finished the scoring for the Ichabods in the first half as he scampered in from 6-yards out finishing a 74-yard drive. Mosley finished the first half with 123 yards and 17 carries.
In the first half, Washburn racked up 265 yards on 45 plays while the Ichabod defense held the Griffons to 88 yards on 26 plays.
The Ichabods scored first in the second half as Mosley rushed for his second touchdown of the day capping a 10-play 57-yard drive putting the Ichabods up 24-7 with 8:23 to play in the third quarter.
Andrew Mead scored on a 6-yard pass reception from Drew Newhart cutting the lead to 24-14 with 1:24 to play in the third quarter.
After a punt by the Ichabods and the Griffons driving, Jarod Tetuan picked off Newhart at the Washburn 41 and returned in 47-yards to the Missouri Western 12 yard line.
Four plays later, Brill used a keeper from 1-yard out to put the Ichabods up 31-14 with 8:18 to play.
The Griffons scored on their next drive as Dustin Strickler to cut the lead to 31-17.
On the ensuing Washburn drive, the Griffons picked up an Ichabod fumble and returned it 70 yards to cut the lead to a touchdown at 31-24 with 3:05 to play.
Washburn then finished out the game as they picked up four first downs on the final drive chalking up the 31-24 win.
For the game, Washburn's Brill passed for 151 yards and one touchdown. Lebahn finished with five catches for 83 yards and the lone touchdown.
Adam Ewy led the ichabod defense with 11 tackles, including nine solo stops. He also had a sack. Tetuan had nine total tackles and the interception return for 47 yards.

About the opponents . . .
Missouri Southern enters Saturday's match-up with a 4-1 overall record and an 2-1 mark in MIAA play - part of a four-way tie for second with Washburn, Pittsburg State and Central Missouri. The Lions have two who are averaging more than 100 yards per game on the ground in Renard Johnson, who is averaging 113.6 yards per game and Alley Broussard, a transfer from Louisiana State is sixth in the MIAA in rushing at 108.8 yards rushing per game. Broussard, who was limited to five carries against Emporia State last time out because of an injury, also has seven touchdown rushes on the season. Adam Hinspeter, the 2005 MIAA Freshman of the Year, is third in the MIAA in passing efficiency, fifth in total offense (179.6 ypg) and fourth in yards per game (188.4) in the conference rankings. Defensively, the Lions are led by Jared Brawner, who has 47 tackles and one sack.

Last time out for the Lions . . .
Joplin, Mo. - Adam Hinspeter threw for 267 yards on 28-33 passing and had three touchdowns as the Missouri Southern football team defeated the visiting Emporia State Hornets 42-19 tonight at Fred G. Hughes Stadium.
Southern (4-1, 2-1) move to 4-1 for the first time since the 2002 season. The Lions scored early and often in the first quarter collecting touchdowns on their first two drives of the game. Renard Johnson rushed for a 37 yard score for the Lions first points, while Alley Brousard rushed for 46 yards on four carries including a two yard score on the second drive to put Southern up 14-0.
Emporia (3-2, 1-2) answered back and just three seconds into the second quarter, Seville Ko scampered in for a one yard score to cut the lead in half.
Broussard then put the Lions up 21-7 when he broke open for a 40 yard score on a fourth and one with just under three minutes remaining in the half. The Lions' defense came up strong on the next drive. The Hornets had marched the ball to the Southern 24 yard line but the defense forced a fourth and six, which ESU went for. An Andre Sloan El pass was incomplete turning the ball over on downs.
With 1:25 left in the half, the Lions were facing a third and 16 with 29 seconds left on the clock, but Hinspeter hooked up with Isaac Norman for a 46 yard pass to the ESU nine yard line. An ESU face mask penalty gave the Lions five more yards, and Hinspeter found Colin Bado in the endzone to make the halftime score 28-7.
Hinspeter was 20-22 in the first half and at one time had completed his first 16 passes in a row, just two off the MIAA record.
ESU had the only score of the third quarter when Sloan El hit Paul Nichols for a 12 yard touchdown pass. The Hornets, however, botched the snap on the extra point and the score stood 28-13.
The Lions added two more touchdown passes from Hinspeter in the fourth quarter, a five yard catch for Norman and a 17 yard score to tight end Korie Henry. A late 29 yard TD rush from the Hornets' Justin Weiser made the final score 42-19 after the two point conversion failed.
The Lions gained 210 yards on the ground tonight led by 149 from Renard Johnson. Broussard had five carries for 86 yards, while Ronnell Newman had 14 yards late for Southern. Hinspeter threw for three touchdowns and 267 yards and was 28-33 for an 84 percent completion percentage. He holds the school record, which he set when he was 19-20 in his first collegiate game against Harding two years ago.
Bado caught nine passes for 87 yards and a touchdown, while Norman had 7 grabs for 97 yards and a score. Johnny Johnson had five catches for 35 yards, while Henry had two for 23 and a TD.
Antwan Dyer led the Lions' defensive attack with 11 tackles, eight solo and one for a loss. Jared Brawner, the reigning MIAA Defensive Player of the Week, had 10 tackles. Corderial Collier had an interception return for 19 yards, while Keith Wyatt picked up a sack.
The Lions were 10 of 17 on third down conversions, while the defense held ESU to just three of 14. Southern was 4-5 in the red zone and a perfect 1-1 on fourth down conversions, with the one play being the 40 yard Broussard touchdown run.

Series Notes . . .
Today's meeting is the 38th meeting in the series. The Lions lead the all-time series 20-16-1. The Ichabods have won eight of the last nine meetings. In games played in Joplin, the Ichabods have won four of the last five. In Topeka, the Ichabods have won the last four games. In the last 11 games in the series,  the average margin of victory has been 7.5 points with seven game being decided by seven or fewer points. The Ichabods have outscored the Lions 369 to 342 - an averaged of 33.5 to 31.1 points.

Last Meeting with Missouri Southern . . .
(Nov. 4, 2006) JOPLIN, Mo. – The Washburn Ichabods pulled out a 14-13 win over Missouri Southern to secure its third straight winning season. With the win, the Ichabods improved to 6-4 and 5-3 in the MIAA while the Lions fell to 4-6 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
The Ichabods fell behind early as the Lions' Brian Malette hit a 45-yard field goal. But the Ichabods responded with a 4-play, 80-yard drive in 47 seconds as Chris Brown ripped off a 34-yard run putting the Ichabods on top.
In the second quarter, Brandon Walker scored on a 5-yard run as the Ichabods took a 14-3 lead into the halftime break.
In the third quarter, the Lions cut the lead to 14-10 on a adam Hinspeter to Johnathon Terry 25-yard touchdown pass. Malette cut the lead to one with 4:10 remaining in the game on another field goal, this time from 27-yards out.
After forcing the Ichabods' into to punt the Lions took possession with 1:59 remaining in the game at the Ichabods' 34 yard line. Hinspeter was dropped for a loss of one and then he connected a 26-yard pass to Colin Bado to the Washburn nine. After a pair of incomplete passes and a no gain rush the Lions lined up for the potential game-winning field goal from the Washburn nine. But the snap was bad and the Ichabods took possession and ran out the final 41 seconds on the clock for the win.
Washburn won despite recording only one first down in the second half as they ran 17 plays in the second half as the Ichabods had second half possession for 10:19. The Ichabod defense held the Lions to 144 yards in the second half.
Sam Sissom had 53 yards in receptions on five catches and Trent Hearn rushed for 62 yards.
On defense, Zach Watkins had 16 tackles including four solo stops.

The Ichabods dropped out of the AFCA National Coaches Poll after their season-opening loss to Chadron State. The Ichabods received votes in each of the AFCA polls since then, but fell out after their loss to Central Missouri. The Ichabods dropped out of the D2football.com national poll after showing at No. 24 in their preseason poll.

Ichabods vs ranked opponents . .
   The Ichabods are 7-34 vs ranked Division II opponents after their win over No. 24 Missouri Western on Sept. 29, 2007. The Ichabods have beat the Griffons two straight times when they were ranked as they also be at No. 11 ranked Griffon squad in the 2006 season finale. The win over the then No. 14 ranked Colorado Mines in the 2005 opener was the first win over a ranked team on the road for the Ichabods and the win over then No. 5 Northwest Missouri was the Ichabods' highest win over a ranked opponent on the road.  The Ichabods' highest win ever over a ranked opponents is their 35-34 overtime win over Pittsburg State, who was ranked No. 4 before losing to the Ichabods on Oct. 1, 2005.Under head coach Craig Schurig, the Ichabods are 7-13 against ranked opponents since 2002. They are 6-5 since the 2004 season including a 3-1 record in 2005.

Bods and Ends . . .

• Five games into his senior season, senior quarterback Jordan Brill is close to putting his name atop the Washburn passing records as he has thrown for 5,617 yards, as one of only four Ichabods to reach 5,000 yards in a career joining Tyler Schuerman (6,525), Joe Schartz (5,527) and Mike Atkins (5,437). He passed Joe Schart for No. 2 on the passing chart on Saturday against Missouri Western.
• Brill needs 909 yards to become Washburn's all-time leading passer. The current record is 6,525 yards held by Tyler Schuerman.
• Brill also passed Dustin Hickel (2001-04) for third on the Washburn all-time total offense chart. Brill has 5,378 career yards combined passing (5,617 and rushing -239).
• Ichabod senior running back Ra'Shawn Mosley has pulled within 384 yards of breaking Trent Hearn's (2003-06) all-time rushing mark of 3,154 yards. Entering the game with the Lions, Mosley has 2,771 career yards. To break the record, Mosley needs to average 64.0 yards per game the remainder of the regular season to snap the record.
• Mosley's 210 yards against the Griffons on Saturday was the third best single-game rushing total in Washburn history behind Kevin McCormick's 241 against Missouri Valley in 1971 and Dino DeLisa's 216 against Benedictine in 1983.
• Mosley (2,771) also needs only 24 yards to pass Dino DeLisa (2,794) for second on the all-time rushing chart.
Zach Watkins is on pace for 149.5 tackles this season with 68 (34 solo, 34 assisted tackles) through five games. The Washburn single-season record is 152 held by Bill Guidetti set in 1984. The NCAA Division II record for tackles in a season is B.J. Russell of Mesa State who had 169 set in 2004 (71 solo, 98 assisted tackles).
• The 60 carries was a team record under head coach Craig Schurig passing the 57 against Missouri Southern in 2005.
• The 33 carries by Ra'Shawn Mosley is tied for the most carries under a Schurig-coached running back.
Jake Lebahn needs 54 yards receiving to go over 1,000 yards for his career.
Jarod Tetuan's interception against Missouri Western was his third of his career and his first of the season.
• The Ichabods have had at least one interception in each game this season. Overall, Washburn has nine interceptions. The school single-season team record is 22 set in 1983.

Up next . . .
The Ichabods will face arch-rival Emporia State in the 2007 Turnpike Tussle. It will be the 104th meeting between the two schools in the most active series played in the NCAA Division II ranks.
