Setting the Scene:
The Washburn Lady Blues will finish a three-game homestand as they take on arch-rival Emporia State in the second edition of the Turnpike Tussle on Thursday in Yager Stadium starting at 7 p.m. The Lady Blues won the first meeting of the season on Sept. 8 in Emporia 6-0. Washburn has also won the last five meetings with the Hornets. On Sunday, the Lady Blues will travel to Omaha, Neb., to take on the defending national champions in Metro State at noon. It will be the first meeting between the two schools. Washburn will return home with matches on Oct. 12 and 13 against Northwest Missouri and Truman respectively.
About the Hornets:
Quick Kicks: Emporia State fell to 0-11 this season and 0-7 in the MIAA after dropping matches to Southwest Baptist and to Missouri Southern over the weekend.
About ESU: The Hornets are led in scoring by Topeka native Sarah Tetuan and Caitlin Riemer, who have both scored three goals this season. Tetuan played her first game in goal for the Hornets against Missouri Southern due to injuries to their two other goalies.
About the coach: Jim Schneiderhahn is 3-26-1 in his second year at ESU and 42-64-7 in his seventh year as a head coach. He came to ESU after serving as an assistant coach at Tulane University. He was the head coach at Benedictine from 2000-04.
Last meeting with Emporia State: Sept. 8, 2007 - W 6-0
EMPORIA, Kan. – The No. 21 ranked Washburn Lady Blues broke or tied 10 school records as they hammered Emporia State 6-0 in their first Turnpike Tussle of the season in Emporia. Washburn will be back in action on Friday as they continue MIAA play at Central Missouri in Warrensburg.
In a match which was all Washburn from the beginning, the Lady Blues outshot Hornets 48 to 2 and saw the first hat-trick in Lady Blues history as All-American
Jessica Mainz scored three goals with an assist to lead the Washburn attack.
Her first goal was the first of the match and her fifth game-winning goal against Emporia State as the Lady Blues won their fifth straight over the Hornets. Mainz scored in the 25th minute of an assist from
Angela Wiseman.
Junior
Lisa Fahey scored her second goal of the season off a corner kick from
Traci Nigg as the Lady Blues took a 2-0 lead into the halftime break as Washburn outshot the Hornets 25 to 0.
In the second half, the Lady Blues continued their domination as junior
Danielle Ayala scored her first of two goals on the afternoon in the 61st minute off an assist from
Ashley Taylor.
Mainz added her second goal of the match on an assist from Ayala and 15:25 later scored her seventh goal of the season and her third of the match unassisted.
Ayala wrapped up the scoring with her third goal of the season with 80th minute off an assist from Mainz.
Freshman
Ashley Klone picked up the shutout in goal with one save as the Lady Blues attempted 22 shots on goal compared to one for the Hornets.

About the Roadrunners:
Quick Kicks: Metro State is 8-2-1 overall this season. Metro won the 2006 NCAA Division II Championship. They return six starters, including leading scorer Katie Kilbey, who has 12 goals and three assists and goalkeeper Rachel Zollner, who has a 0.41 GAA in 10 appearances this season allowing four goals. Metro will take on Nebraska-Omaha on Friday, then face the Lady Blues on Sunday.
About the coach: Danny Sanchez is in his sixth season as the Roadrunners' head coach. He is 120-9-6 overall.

TOPEKA, Kan. -- For the second straight game and second straight night, Washburn played 110 minutes and finished in a tie as the Lady Blues and Missouri Southern played to a 1-1 tie. Washburn will be back in action on Oct. 4 when they play host to Emporia State at 7 p.m. in Yager Stadium.
Washburn (5-4-3, 3-2-2 MIAA) held an 20 to 5 advantage in shots in the match including a 6 to 0 advantage in both of the overtimes, but could not get any to enter the net. Washburn's best chance came in the 103rd minute as
Danielle Ayala's shot hit the right post and
Manon Englehardt's follow hit the right side of the net leading to a goal kick for the Lions.
Washburn's
Markie Gallagher's first career collegiate goal put Washburn up 1-0. Her goal was scored unassisted from 7-yards out in the 34th minute. The Lady Blues pressed the tempo in the first half as they attempted nine shots to two for the Lions (7-2-2, 4-2-1 MIAA).
Ashley Klone did not record a save in the first half as both of Missouri Southern's shots were not on goal.
The Lions' Nikki Llewellyn scored with 6:08 left in the match to knot the score at 1-1 on a free kick from 11-yards out into the upper far side corner after a Washburn foul outside the goal box.
Klone finished with one save in the match and Missouri Southern's Kaney Tyler had five saves for the Lions.

For the first time this season and in the last 13 polls overall dating back to last season, the Lady Blues were not in the National Soccer Coaches Association national poll falling out after being ranked No. 15 in last week's poll. The Lady Blues entered the 2007 season ranked No. 13 in the National Soccer Coaches Association National Preseason Poll which was released the week before the season began. The Lady Blues finished the 2006 season ranked No. 12 in the final poll. Washburn has been ranked in the last 13 national polls earning a ranking as high as No. 9 topping the No. 10 ranking they earned in the final regular season poll of 2006.
