Lady Blues enter MIAA Postseason Soccer Tournament as No. 3 seed

Setting the Scene:
The Lady Blues are the No. 3 seeded team in the first MIAA Postseason Tournament which will begin at noon on Nov. 3 in Warrensburg, Mo., as the top seeded Central Missouri Jennies will face the No. 4 seeded Southwest Baptist Lady Bearcats. The Lady Blues will take on the No. 2 seeded Truman Bulldogs at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The two semifinal winners will play for the automatic qualifier into the NCAA Central Regional Tournament on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The game against Truman will be the 100th in the program's history.

About the Bulldogs:
Quick Kicks: The Bulldogs are 13-5-1 this season and finished the MIAA 10-3-1 as co-MIAA   champions with Central Missouri. The Jennies are the No.1 seed and host because of their 1-0-1 record against the Bulldogs this season. The Lady Blues and Bulldogs split their two regular season meetings with Truman winning 2-0 in Kirksville, Mo. on Sept. 21 and the Lady Blues winning 2-1 on Oct. 13 in Topeka. This will be the two teams first meeting on a neutral field. Truman leads the all-time series 6-3-1 and has out scored the Lady Blues 22-11 in 10 all-time meetings.
About the coach: Mike Cannon is in his 15th season at Truman and is the most successful coach to ever lead the Bulldogs during the last 23 years of the program's existence. Over the past five seasons, the Bulldogs have compiled a record of 197-70-25 (.752), which is one of the best in NCAA Division II during that period.  Last meeting with the Bulldogs: Oct. 13, 2007 - W 2-1
After Washburn and Truman went into halftime tied at 1-1 Saturday night at Yager Stadium, the Lady Blues came out strong in the second half, scoring early and then holding off a late charge by the Bulldogs for a 2-1 win.
Manon Englehardt scored the game-winner at 47:48 after she took a pass from Jessica Mainz in the box, dribbled through the defense and then slid the ball from the right side into an empty net for her fourth of the year.
That shot was the first of nine by the Lady Blues in the second half. They controlled the play through much of the period and then stopped late chances by the Bulldogs.
One of their best chances to tie the score came 10 minutes into the period. Katelyn Talcott received an open-field pass and took a shot 12 yards out that went straight into the hands of WU goalkeeper Jenny Persons.
The Lady Blues had to come back after giving up a first-half goal at 28:46 to TSU's Katie Reuck on an assist from Jessica Wiegert.
About four minutes later Ashley Taylor took a corner kick from the right side and sent it to the far post where Lisa Fahey knocked it in from five yards out for her fourth of the year.
Washburn took 16 shots in the match while Truman managed seven. The Lady Blues put seven shots on goal while TSU put on six. Persons made five saves and picked up her second win of the year.

About the Jennies:
Quick Kicks: The Jennies enter the tournament as the No. 1 seed after sharing their first MIAA regular season title with Truman. Central is the host school after their 1-0-1 head to head record with the Bulldogs this season. The Jennies are 12-4-2 this season.
About the coach: Lewis Theobald is in his first season at the helm of the Jennies soccer program. His career records stands at 12-4-2, 10-3-1 in the MIAA. He spent last season as the first assistant at Division I Indiana State where he was the lead recruiter. He was also in charge of scouting as well as game and player evaluations. He is a 1999 graduate of the University of Kansas.
Last meeting with Central Missouri: TOPEKA, Kan. – The Lady Blues' Lisa Fahey scored from 10-yards out on a header in the 82nd minute to give Washburn a 1-0 win over Central Missouri in the regular season home finale. Fahey's fifth goal of the season came on a free kick from Traci Nigg after the Jennies were whistled for a handball.
Jenny Persons picked up the save in goal for the Lady Blues as she picked up three saves. Washburn outshot the Jennies 15 to 4 and 6 to 3 in shots on goal.
The top four teams qualify for the MIAA's postseason tournament. Truman enters the final weekend with 28 points, Central Missouri has 25, the Lady Blues are in third place with 24 and Missouri Southern and Southwest Baptist are tied for fourth with 19 points.

Quick Kicks: The Lady Bearcats enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed with a 9-7-2, 8-5-1 MIAA record.
About the coach: Benajamin Wade is 19-11-7 in his second season as a NCAA head coach.
Last meeting with Southwest Baptist: Oct. 27  - BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues wrapped up the No.3 seed in next weekend's MIAA Postseason Soccer tournament with a 2-1 double overtime win over Southwest Baptist on Jessica Mainz's 15th goal of the season. Washburn will take on the No. 2 seeded Truman squad at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The winners of the Washburn/Truman and Central Missouri/Southwest Baptist matches will play at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
The Lady Blues took the lead early in the 16th minute as Danielle Ayala scored to put Washburn up 1-0. The goal was the only one of the first half for either team.
In the second half, both teams were scoreless until Dominie Emmanuel scored in the 77th minute to tie the score at 1-1.
After a scoreless first overtime, Mainz ended the game on an assist from Ayala sending the Lady Blues back to Topeka with the 2-1 win. It was the third overtime win for the Lady Blues all-time once a match entered extra periods as the Lady Blues are now 3-6-19 all-time. Mainz also has two of the three “golden goals.”
Ashley Klone picked up the win in goal for the Lady Blues with five saves improving to 7-2-1 in net for Washburn this season.

Lady Blues in the National Poll:
The Lady Blues fell out of the Sept. 25 ending their streak of being ranked in 13  straight polls overall dating back to last season. The Lady Blues entered the 2007 season ranked No. 13 in the National Soccer Coaches Association National Preseason Poll which was released the week before the season began. The Lady Blues finished the 2006 season ranked No. 12 in the final poll. Washburn has been ranked in the last 13 national polls earning a ranking as high as No. 9 topping the No. 10 ranking they earned in the final regular season poll of 2006.

Up next: Should the Lady Blues win the MIAA Tournament, they will receive the MIAA's automatic qualifier into the NCAA Central Regional Tournament as part of the national tournament. Otherwise, the Lady Blues will have to look for an at-large bid which would take the top six teams in the region.
