Lady Blues fall to #13 Roadrunners 2-1

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Washburn Lady Blues fell 2-1 to No. 13 Metro State in Omaha, Neb., to fall to 6-5-3 on the season. Washburn will be back in action on Friday night in Yager Stadium when they play host to Northwest Missouri at 7 p.m. followed by Truman the following evening at 7 p.m.
The Lady Blues took the early lead 3:30 into the match as Jessica Mainz scored her 14th goal of the season on a cross from the corner from Manon Englehardt. The goal set the Washburn single-season goal record and added to her single-season point record of 33 points (14 goals, 5 assists).
Metro State, the defending national champions, tied the score in the 12th minute as Madison McQuilliams scored her ninth goal from Katie Kilbey on a cross. The Roadrunners took the lead for good in the 41st minute when Becca Mays netted her eighth goal of the season on a pass from Linnea Dengah taking a 2-1 lead in the halftime break.
Neither team would score in the second half as Metro took the win.
The Lady Blues outshot the Roadrunners 17 to 6 overall and 12 to 2 in the second half, but they could not convert any of the shot attempts into goals.
It  was a physical match as there were 15 fouls called with 10 coming against the Roadrunners. Metro's head coach Danny Sanchez and Gabby Klipp were both ejected in the 56th minute. Sanchez was sent off for language and Klipp was red carded for violent conduct at the 55:27 mark of the second half.
